Delete Your Account
This page explains how to delete your account and personal data from Ghost Story Review (the "App"), published by Ghost Story Review ("GSR," "we," "us," or "our"). It also sets out exactly what is deleted and what is retained.
You do not need to have the App installed to make this request. If you have already uninstalled it, use the email route in If you have already uninstalled the app below.
This page describes the same process set out in Section 7 of our Privacy Policy. Where the two differ, the Privacy Policy governs.
Deleting your account from inside the app
This is the fastest route and it takes effect immediately. In the App:
- Open Profile.
- Select Delete Account.
- Re-authenticate. To confirm the request is really coming from you, you will be asked to re-enter your password, or — for accounts linked to Google — to complete a fresh Google sign-in prompt.
- Confirm. You will be asked to explicitly confirm the deletion, including typing a confirmation phrase.
Nothing is removed until you complete every step above. Once you confirm, deletion begins immediately.
If you have already uninstalled the app
You have two options.
Option 1 — Reinstall and delete in-app
Reinstall Ghost Story Review, sign in, and follow the steps in Deleting your account from inside the app. This is the fastest option, because it completes immediately and requires no manual verification on our side.
Option 2 — Request deletion by email
Email us and we will delete the account for you:
- Send to
- support@ghoststoryreview.com
- Subject line
- Account Deletion Request
- Include
-
- The email address associated with your Ghost Story Review account
- Your @username, if you remember it
- Send it from
- The email address on the account, wherever possible. We can only delete an account once we are satisfied the request came from its owner, and sending from the account address is the simplest way to establish that. If you no longer control that address, email us anyway and we will tell you what else we need.
We will acknowledge your request within 7 days and complete the deletion within 30 days of verifying that the account is yours. We will email you to confirm once it is done. We do not charge for this, and we will not ask you to explain why.
What gets deleted
When an account is deleted, we delete the following, in this order:
- Every review, post, lore entry, and Flicker you authored, including any photos or videos attached to them;
- Every comment, reply, and like you have left anywhere on the Service;
- Every follow relationship connected to your account, in both directions;
- Every block you created;
- Your profile photo;
- The private record holding your email address, date of birth, and push notification token;
- Your account profile record, including your display name and bio;
- Your authentication credentials — your email and password, or your linked Google sign-in. These are deleted last, once everything above has been removed.
Removing your profile record automatically triggers a further cleanup, which deletes your bookmarks — the reviews, posts, lore entries, Flickers, and locations you had saved — along with your in-app notification history and your copies of any warnings you had received. The moderation records behind those warnings are retained; see below.
What is retained, and why
Some information is not deleted along with your account.
| What we keep | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Direct messages you sent or received | So that the other participants' conversation history stays intact, and so that any reported message remains available for trust-and-safety review | Indefinitely. Your name and photo are removed — you appear under a generic placeholder identity instead |
| Copies of reported messages | When a message is reported, we store a copy of it and a limited number of surrounding messages from that conversation, as they appeared at the time of the report, as part of the moderation record | Indefinitely. This copy is not removed if the original message is deleted or if either participant deletes their account |
| Your @username | So that a username tied to prior activity cannot be claimed by someone else | Permanently reserved. It is never reissued, even though your account and profile no longer exist |
| Haunted-location records you created or submitted | Locations are shared reference records that other users' reviews, lore, and content attach to | Indefinitely. Only a GSR administrator can remove a location |
| Suggested edits to locations | They form part of the record of how a location's details came to be what they are | Indefinitely, including any note you wrote. One already approved or rejected is left as it was; one still awaiting review is automatically marked rejected and removed from the moderation queue, but the suggestion itself is kept |
| Reports, moderation decisions, feedback, and internal audit logs | Trust and safety, investigating abuse, and complying with legal obligations | Indefinitely, whether you filed the report or were the subject of one |
Content you posted that other users have copied, screenshotted, or otherwise saved outside the Service is not within our control and cannot be deleted by us.
Account deletion is irreversible. Once your authentication credentials are removed, you cannot sign back in, and none of the deleted data can be recovered. If you want a copy of anything you have posted, save it before you delete.
Deleting some data without deleting your account
You do not have to delete your whole account to remove data. From within the App you can:
- Delete individual content — reviews, photos, videos, and lore entries can each be deleted on their own. We remove the item from display and delete the underlying file from storage within a reasonable period. For photos, this also invalidates the direct access link.
- Edit your profile — your display name and other profile details can be changed at any time.
- Revoke location access — location permission can be granted, denied, or revoked at any time in your device settings.
